Autumn foliage, summer sunshine and lace heaven – The Marriage of Kat and Chris at Oulton Hall, part 1.

Yes I know.

A bride and groom LYING down in the leaves on a September day in England- brave, yes but SO worth all the persuasion I had to use. For me, this sums up the trust my couples place in me on their wedding day. I’m so very lucky to work with some truly wonderful people.

Kat and Chris’ day was really very special. Romantically stylish, elegantly chic and bursting to the seams with love and smiles. To top it off we had baking hot temperatures and non stop sunshine all day.

This wedding is so achingly beautiful I barely know where to start. Grab a glass of something bubbly and immerse yourself in a Downton abbey inspired day…

First the details. From the soft pearls of her necklace to the vintage photographs of family weddings over the decades, this bride is wonderfully stylish. Kat chose to compliment her venue decor with lavish golds, antique pinks and soft blooms.

Oulton hall with its chandeliers and manicured gardens was the perfect setting for this wedding. Luxurious but without being ostentatious.

Most of our couples are incredibly calm on the morning of their weddings, and Kat and Chris have always been serene and smiling whenever we’ve met, so it was no surprise they both prepared in a happy and relaxed mood. Both of them were excited and cheerful and managed not to let any stress get the better of them. It meant a lovely leisurely morning, filled with anticipation and happiness. I love this part of the day, you can feel the giddiness building, with the big day finally here and the next few hours being some of the most important of the couples lives. Its magical actually.

The Repton room at the hotel was the setting for the ceremony. This room is flooded with light from windows on 2 sides accompanied by the most elegant decor. It’s a dream for photographing the ceremony, as the soft diffused light pouring in through the windows always seems to make brides look radiant. The ceremony was gentle and moving. The bride made her entrance to Clair de lune by Debussy. It’s quiet and serene notes seemed to float in the air as she gracefully glided down the aisle. Gorgeous.

With the formalities over, guests spilled out into the gardens and into the incredible warm sunshine beating down. This was the 30th September, and it was already in the high 20s c outside. Unbelievable. Kat told me lots of her guests had gone on a last minute shopping spree to buy more lightweight outfits, as many had assumed a cold day and brought outfits to match. Who could have guessed it would be more like high summer?
The couple had hired a singer to entertain guests and he certainly brought a lovely atmosphere.

While the singer softly crooned away, I whisked Kat and Chris off through the grounds to create some memories. Kat’s beautiful gown ( Suzanne Neville’s ‘Maiden’ ) is so incredibly romantic and I wanted to reflect that, because it sums up this couples relationship too. The gown is by Suzanne Neville. It’s utterly exquisite. Lace heaven.

I love surprises, and Kat had a rather special surprise waiting for her as we returned from our photographs. The singer placed a chair in the centre of the terrace and serenaded the bride, much to the amusement of everyone. It was a really fun, spontaneous moment and it led to Kat and Chris performing an impromptu first dance under the golden rays of the autumnal sunshine. A priceless moment, totally unplanned and incredibly romantic.

Oh my, I told you it was something special didn’t I?

As I’m writing this Glen Miller’s ” In the Mood” is playing on the radio ( Radio two is my guilty pleasure when writing, yes I know – tragic) But somehow it seems to fit these images. Timeless.

My love and congratulations to Mr and Mrs Haigh. Getting to know you both has been a total joy.

Still to come, romance in the evening sunlight, and the story behind THAT image in the leaves. Lots more pretty in the next instalment.
