Sweet disposition – the romantic engagement shoot of Neil and Rebecca – A UK wedding blog

A Cat Hepple Photography UK wedding blog post

Picture the scene- its the 27th December 2009 and its absolutely freezing. The ground is treacherously icy and most people are safely tucked up indoors enjoying the Christmas festivities.

Rebecca Todd wondered why on earth her boyfriend Neil Charlton was insisting on dragging her out  for a walk in Roundhay Park in Leeds, in the bitter temperatures, when all she wanted to do was stay inside in the warm.

Little did she know, Neil had a plan- to propose to her at a spot they had always considered to be their own, the memorial in the park. This was somewhere they’d come together to chat, daydream and enjoy precious time and he knew it was the perfect place for a proposal.

Neil had conjured up a cunning plan. On boxing day he’d gone out into the garden with his Dad, and drawn a map of the park in the snow, showing his Dad where he wanted him to leave a bottle of champagne and 2 glasses- in the fountain inside the memorial. He’d chosen the ring and thought about what he was going to say.

Nervous, Neils Dad had dashed to the park ahead of the couple and loving placed the champagne (in a peg bag!) inside the fountain. But worried someone else might find it and enjoy the bubbles, he decided to hang around in the bushes to make sure it stayed safe!

Having slipped and slid their way across the park, the couple arrived at the memorial, and Rebecca had absolutely no idea what was to follow.

Neil recalls Rebecca ” balling her eyes out so much” he didn’t know if she’d actually said yes. But of course she had accepted his proposal and was utterly over the moon with excitement and happiness. Neils Dad was also rather relieved the champagne had remained in the fountain for the couple to enjoy.

Because of the ice Rebecca decided to put plastic bags over the Ugg boots to protect them- So as Neil got down on one knee she realised how ridiculous she must look ” can you imagine getting engaged with plastic bags on my feet?” she laughs.

Choosing somewhere for their pre wedding shoot was so easy for Neil and Rebecca- it had to be Roudhay park and especially the memorial and fountain where their story really all began.

With such a heartwarming and funny engagement story to tell, I really wanted to capture the love and spirit of this couple.

They fell in love long before they ever told each other, they were close friends for years. “We always knew what each other was thinking” Neil says ” We have the same outlook.”

They gel together so well these two. They are so devoted to one another, so sweet. They giggle a lot, reassure each other with a smile or a soft touch, and seem so happy together. Photographing them was an absolute joy.

Rebecca works in fashion, and Neil is just so cool, we thought we’d try some funkier edged shots along with the romance. This is the whole point of an engagement shoot, test the water, find the comfort zone and work out together what works. The couple love these more modern shots as much as the romantic ones, so we’ll be doing both styles on their wedding day.

I love this couple- they are fun, gentle and so in love. Spending a morning with them chatting about their early days, their wedding and the future was so uplifting. I love how they are brave in front of the camera, they trusted me and went with the flow. Neil overcame his slight nerves about being photographed and relaxed within minutes. Rebecca worked the camera and wasn’t shy about being close to her man. The result is breathtaking images which they adore and which really portray them both and their wonderful romance.

Most of all I just love the story about the peg bag and plastic bags….its such a cute start to their life together and I’ve been chuckling about it for days.
